Bradley's arm, bat lead Wildcats to win in sectional

J.R. Bradley started it and finished it for Nitro Tuesday night. And he didn't do too badly in the middle, either.

Bradley fired a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts and also had a pair of run-scoring hits, leading Nitro to a 4-2 victory over host St. Albans in the opener of their best-of-three Class AAA sectional at Loftis Field.

The Wildcats (26-4), the No. 2 team in the Gazette's state rankings, can clinch the Region 4 Section 1 crown tonight at 6 at Brandon Matthew Sneed Field in Nitro. They're expected to throw No. 2 pitcher Andrew Pickering (7-0) against SA left-hander Andy Hapney (6-5).

Bradley (8-0) walked only one and his team never trailed after Bradley blasted a solo home run in the first inning, his 11th of the season. He also tacked on an RBI single with two out in the seventh for an insurance run after the Red Dragons (20-11) had shaved their deficit back to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth to keep it interesting.

"I didn't know I'd start it like that or not,'' Bradley said, "but we'll take it. We got the momentum early and kind of kept it throughout the game. Sectionals is always when both teams come with their best, and we really try to do the things and execute what we've worked for all year.

"Both teams, we thrive on this. It's a rivalry. It is. And it's a lot of fun to play in. I've never heard people in the stands calling me out like that.''

St. Albans got a good effort out of right-hander Calvin Bench (5-1), who suffered his first loss. He allowed nine hits, with five of those coming in the final two innings as Nitro managed to maintain its small lead by scoring once in each frame. Bench struck out three and walked three in going the distance.

Nitro never led by more than two runs. In fact, it was only the third time this season the hard-hitting Wildcats had won by scoring four or fewer runs. They average almost 10 runs per game.

"We haven't played in a lot of these kinds of games this year,'' said Nitro coach Steve Pritchard. "So it was good for us. As a matter of fact, I think 8-2 was maybe the closest game we've had all year with J.R. [pitching]. It was a good test for him, a good test for us and we showed some character there.''

Pritchard was pleased his team got production throughout the lineup. Nitro received a solo shot from Zach Cloxton in the third to make it 2-0 and a clutch two-out RBI single by Justin Clark in the sixth for a 3-1 edge.

"Justin Clark came through there,'' Pritchard said, "and Jon Entenmann lined a two-strike pitch over second base to get things started [in the seventh]. Those are two of our lesser-known players, but they're guys we know can play.

"Korey Dunbar [2-for-3, walk] had four quality at-bats and of course, J.R. did his thing. That's why we think he's the best player in the state. He's a guy who hits them over the fence and drives them in and obviously, his pitching speaks for itself. It takes a team to win tournament games, and that's kind of what we had tonight in effort.''

St. Albans stayed in contention behind Bench, Wade Walters, who launched his eighth homer of the year (a solo blast in the fourth) and Sammy McCoy, who doubled and scored on Hapney's two-out single in the sixth.

"We expected to win,'' said Red Dragons coach Rick Whitman. "Probably nobody else expected us to, but our guys do. They kind of feel like they haven't gotten a lot of respect this year, and they've got something to prove. We're not into moral victories and I'm sure our kids will come out the next game and play hard. Sure I'd have liked to have a few more hits and a few more runs, but I don't have any complaints with the way we played.

"Nitro's got a good team and you've got to tip your hats to them, but our kids battled. Our guys are familiar with them. They know all about them. They respect them, but I don't think there's any intimidation or fear of playing them.''

Nitro, SA Renew Rivalry

Annual showdown between Wildcats, Red Dragons one of many intriguing sectional draws

A couple weeks ago, it looked like the luster had wiped clean off the Nitro-St. Albans baseball sectional.

Always one of the most competitive first-round postseason matchups, the Region 4 Section 1 rivalry looked a bit one-sided at that point. Nitro was in the process of winning 18 straight games and SA was scuffling around, barely over the .500 mark.

But then it happened. The Red Dragons got their signature win, edging the top-ranked Wildcats 9-8 on April 20, which seemed to elevate their play down the stretch of the regular season.

So when Nitro (25-4) and St. Albans (19-9) lock up in their annual best-of-three showdown starting Tuesday night at SA, look for another interesting series.

"I think we're quietly having a pretty good season,'' said SA coach Rick Whitman.

The Red Dragons have relied on the hitting of Tyler Hart (.421), Andy Hapney (.402), Sammy McCoy (.394) and Wade Walters (.368).

Nitro, which has played in the last three state tournaments, is 88-13 over the past three seasons with a senior-dominated lineup. The Wildcats are the No. 2 team in the Gazette's Class AAA state rankings.

Leading the way at the plate have been J.R. Bradley (.523), the injured Tyler Godbey (.494), Andrew Pickering (.455) and Zach Cloxton (.436).

Wildcats coach Steve Pritchard has certainly noticed the way St. Albans closed out the regular season.

"They are playing a lot better,'' Pritchard said. "I think if you'll look at it, the injury bug hit them earlier in the year and now they're getting healthy. The injuries kind of hit us at the end of the year, and we're kind of limping into things. I think it's maybe check the boxscore and see who's playing and who's not playing. It's kind of role reversal for the two teams.''

Postseason play begins for several Kanawha Valley teams on Monday. Here's a capsule look at the other matchups:

Class AAA

Logan vs. South Charleston vs. George Washington: Region 3 Section 3 begins Monday with the Wildcats (16-9) playing at SC (20-9) at 6:30 p.m., then GW (21-10) travels to Logan the next day.

The Wildcats won single games against each of the other two teams, while the Black Eagles and Patriots split a pair of regular-season games.

Riverside at Capital: The best-of-three Region 3 Section 4 series begins Wednesday, with all games at Capital (15-14). The Cougars won both regular-season meetings with the Warriors (12-17) by scores of 9-6 and 6-5.

Right after winning eight in a row, Riverside has lost its last seven games.

Hurricane vs. Lincoln County vs. Winfield: Region 4 Section 3 begins Monday with Lincoln County (1-22) traveling to Winfield (13-17), where all games in this event will be held.

The Generals won both times the teams met so far, 7-1 and 11-0. Hurricane (21-9) is 2-0 against both Winfield and the Panthers.

Class AA

Herbert Hoover vs. Clay vs. Sissonville: All three teams have decent records in Region 4 Section 1, which begins Monday with the Huskies (17-9) tackling the host Panthers (17-10).

Sissonville (21-10), which is ranked No. 2 in AA after spending much of the season in the top spot, plays the winner of that game Tuesday, with all games at Clay County

Indians coach John Brown pointed to his team's challenging schedule as reason for being prepared for the postseason.

"Things have been going good for us,'' he said. "We ran off 17 out of 18 against good competition. We played all the good teams in double-A. We didn't have to. We wanted a lot of away games at the end of the season - Hurricane, Nitro - just because all our [postseason] games will be on the road. We're happy where we're at.''

Poca at Sherman: The best-of-three in Region 4 Section 2 begins Monday in Seth.

The Dots (11-14-1) have mercy-ruled the Tide in each of the teams' two meetings, 19-9 and 15-5, but Poca has dropped eight of its last nine.

Class A

Buffalo vs. Wahama vs. Hannan: All games in Region 4 Section 1 will be played at Buffalo beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday with No. 7 Wahama (20-4) against the Wildcats (4-8). No. 6 Buffalo (20-9) meets the winner Wednesday.

Wahama and Buffalo have played once so far, with the Bison winning 5-2 on April 15 behind ace left-hander Jason Lewis (four-hitter, 11 strikeouts).

Charleston Catholic vs. Van vs. St. Joseph: All games in Region 4 Section 2 are set for Epling Field in East Bank.

The favored No. 9 Irish (20-11) face Van (7-16) at 6 p.m. Monday. Catholic won both meetings so far 16-1, 17-1. Catholic then plays St. Joseph on Tuesday. Van downed St. Joseph 24-10 on April 16.
